One day, opportunity knocked at my door—literally. I needed my carpet cleaned, and when the work crew arrived to do the job, they told me I should come and work with them.

At the time I was young and I held three jobs, working up to 14 hours a day, six and a half days every week. As you can imagine, this started to wear on me.

I knew nothing about cleaning carpets at the time, but they offered a training program and it sounded like a solid job, so I said yes. I had a job before they finished cleaning my carpet!

I loved my new job, enjoyed learning to clean carpet, and applied myself whole heartedly, learning everything there is to know about stain removal and restoring floors to their original clean, like new appearance. I found that making homes fresh and bright and pleasing homeowners brought me great satisfaction. After working with the company for more than a year and perfecting my skills, I began dreaming about starting my own carpet cleaning business.

One of my friends had started a moving company and another had started a construction company. They encouraged me to start my own cleaning business, and it just made sense.

I soon realized though that being an expert carpet cleaner didn’t equip me to run a carpet cleaning business. I understood carpet cleaning. I understood exceptional service. But I didn’t understand marketing. Opening the company took 10 minutes and about $100. My initial investment was manageable—I purchased a van and a $3,000 portable machine. But the next steps were a challenge. I knew nothing about how to grow my business.

I found my first customers with Groupon offers, but the margins were so tight I made hardly any money per cleaning job. Early on I worked at a restaurant on the side just to pay my bills and keep my fledgling business afloat. But those initial low-cost offers resulted in satisfied customers and my customer base and reputation grew. I invested in classes to deepen my carpet cleaning expertise and expand my cleaning skills for upholstery, fabric, natural stone, tile and air ducts. The certificates I earned gave customers confidence in my abilities. I also educated myself about marketing.

Today I offer a broader array of services and have a growing customer base thanks to repeat business from regular customers and their referrals to friends and neighbors. In addition, my high ratings on Yelp and Google result in an ongoing influx of new customers. With the quality of my work established, my service is now in high demand and continues to grow organically thanks to the help of my customers who post referrals and recommend my business to others.

As my business has grown, I’ve invested in equipment that allows me to provide an even higher level of service to my clients. I use a sealer door that keeps heating and cooling in and bugs out when exterior doors have to be open. The sealer door also provides security since the exterior door appears closed. Most carpet cleaners don’t offer this level of service.

I’ve also upgraded to commercial quality truck mounted equipment, which means I can clean residential customers’ carpets faster than before, saving them time. It also enables me to take on larger commercial jobs. My expanded services offer efficiency to my customers as well. Customers who need both carpet cleaning and air duct cleaning can have both done simultaneously.

So many of my customers are bothered by allergies, that I’ve added air duct cleaning to my services. If you’re challenged by allergies it’s important to attack the problem with both carpet cleaning and air duct cleaning. We love helping our customers feel better. We recently added a second van exclusively for the air duct cleaning portion of the business.

Everything we do is focused on making our customers’ lives better and easier. For example, no one wants to spend half a day waiting for their carpet cleaner. We give our customers a two-hour arrival window, while most in the industry give a four-hour window. We try to exceed industry standards in every way.

When people ask my tips for success, I share three: “Experience. Experience. Experience.”

When I first stepped on American soil, I had a dream. I had ambition. But I had no experience. The same was true when I began cleaning carpets, and again when I launched my business. Success is possible without experience–especially when it’s paired with determination and perseverance–but it’s not a given. According to the Small Business Association, 50 percent of new businesses fail during the first five years. My determination and perseverance didn’t let me quit when I faced obstacles. Now, experience has become my differentiator. It is experience that sets SV Professional Cleaning apart.

My clients depend on my expertise. They know I use the best techniques and tools. And I love making their lives better.

My passion is restoring homes and businesses to clean, fresh spaces where my customers can live their American dreams—and in doing so, I’m living mine.

Thank you for your business and the trust you place in me!
