What we did:

It’s not just houses that require clean air ducts. The HVAC systems in condominiums need regular cleaning as well. If you are a condominium owner, then you know that everything inside your condo walls is your responsibility, including the air ducts. To ensure your condo remains comfortable and clean, it’s a good idea to have your air ducts cleaned regularly.

This customer owns a condominium in a multi-story complex in Alexandria. When he called us to clean his HVAC ducts it posed a challenge since his was a garden-style unit on the fourth floor. Rather than using the equipment in the truck, as we would with most house calls, we would have to use portable equipment. When cleaning air vents in houses, the cleaning process itself usually takes more time. With condos and apartments, the setup time can take longer than the time needed to clean the vents.

Fortunately, the air duct systems in most condominiums are smaller and can be cleaned using brush cables and a portable air compressor. The brush cables are highly effective at removing built-up dust and debris, and the air duct vacuum captures the dust. The entire job took less than five hours.

One unique aspect of this job was there were more vents than ducts. This particular condo features a number of internal vents that aren’t connected to the ductwork but promote air circulation between rooms. Although these vents didn’t require cleaning, they had to be identified to ensure the ducts were properly cleaned.

Most condominium owners don’t think about having their air ducts cleaned, but even in a smaller space the furnace and air-conditioner will circulate dirt particles, dust, pet dander, pollen, and other contaminants. Duct systems are not sealed so dirt around the duct system will continue to circulate and create poor air quality that can exacerbate issues such as lung disease.

Regular air duct cleaning also preserves the HVAC system, removing dirt and debris that can affect the furnace and air conditioner. Duct cleaning can also save money on costly repairs and equipment replacements.

Ductwork circulating in smaller living spaces, such as a condominium, also tend to trap odors such as cooking smells. When dirt and debris build up over time so can the odors. Most condo owners notice an immediate improvement once their ducts are cleaned.

Our air duct cleaning client in this case was extremely pleased with his service, so much so he was open to us interviewing him as well about his experience. Once we are able to touch base with him, we’ll update this case study with his own words on his experience.
